Membership Update

As of the 21st of July 2023, we would like to thank the 930 returning members for 2023/24. We really appreciate your continued commitment to the club.

We would like to welcome the 34 new golfing members who have joined the club since July 1. We hope you all have a long and enjoyable membership at Wyong and we warmly welcome you all to the Wyong family. We hope you take advantage of everything the club has to offer.

Our Golf Memberships will lapse on 31 July 2023. If you have not renewed by then you will become un-financial. Given that we value your membership, we would not like this to happen to you. We look forward to you renewing your membership by next Tuesday. Please feel free to call and pay your membership over the phone if that is more suitable. If you wish to discuss your current Membership, please give us a call on (02) 4352 1361.

Good luck

Our Chief Superintendent Kent Smith jetted off to Ireland on the 27th of July to represent Australia in the World  Oztag games. We wish Kent and the Australian team all the best for the tournament.

Please support Dylan and Joey our two budding PGA professionals who have their major PGA Associate Championship at Tura Beach from the 29th of August to the 1st of September by purchasing a raffle ticket the next time you visit the pro shop. We wish them all the best for the tournament.

Speedy Recovery

We wish Kelly Wellsmore a speedy recovery from her operation last week. We look forward to having Kelly back at the front desk and looking after the marketing and events at the club shortly.

Enjoy your golf and everything the club has to offer.

Captains News

G'day members,

A trial of reversing the two starting tees has been in place since May 3, 2023. This trial was put in place to determine if we would realise the following benefits:

  • Playing groups getting away quicker on a par 5
  • Improve starters' view to tee box
  • Improving the overall average speed of rounds

After almost 11 weeks of the trial and receiving feedback of average round times we have determined the trial did not help in achieving our objectives, therefore the Golf Committee has decided we should revert to the starting tee sequence prior to the commencement of the trial, commencing Tuesday, August 1st.

We have however discussed at length how we may assist in speeding up our competition rounds and are of the opinion we could do this by introducing compulsory call-ups at three of our par 3 holes.

The compulsory call-ups will be on the 4th, 13th & 15th. To do this, and comply with our safety obligations, we will be installing safety fences at these holes to provide protection for players to take refuge upon signalling to the next group on the tee (to hit up).

Players will only be required to call up if the group behind is on the tee waiting to be called up.

We expect the installation of the safety fences to be completed by the end of August 2023. We will advise when the compulsory call-up officially commences.

  • A new Golf Information board has been installed between the 1st & 10th tees, we would like to remind all golfers to check the electronic notice screen (behind the Pro's desk) regarding the event for the day & other information.
  • We have increased the number of rakes in the bigger bunkers with just a couple more to be included. Thanks to those players who are placing the rakes with handles pointing out enabling easy and quick retrieval of rakes.
  • We would like to remind all golfers NO "gimmes" are allowed in competition rounds - all putts must be played unless you are picking up.

On an interesting note, we have had only two men (playing in comps) have a hole-in-one so far this year. Our yearly average is around 11 per year! Hopefully, you're next!

Happy golfing everyone,
WGC Captain - Tony Calleja.

Our President Jeni & her team organised a bus trip to Hawks Nest Golf Club where we all enjoyed a wonderful day of golf, trivia, lunch and friendship.

The Captains vs Presidents Day last week saw the battle between Red & Blue. It was a great day full of humour and banter, with the Captain's team narrowly winning the bragging rights!

4BBB Championships are coming up in August so ensure your partner is available for the 2 rounds.

Congratulations to Louise Mullard who is currently ranked Number 1 Australian Women's Senior Amateur after 4 events this year. It's a fantastic achievement, and we are very proud of you!

Course News

The golf course is currently in the grips of winter, with very minimal growth on the tees, fairways and rough. There has been very little rain to speak of. The complete opposite of this time last year.

Our greens are currently in a healthy state. We are still cutting every day and rolling 3 times a week.

All our bunkers have had a top-up of sand. They are on the soft fluffy side this time of year due to very little rainfall and the greens not requiring irrigation.

The new concrete pathway on the 6th is more than halfway complete. Once completed we hope to start on the 5th, with either end to be done.

Kent Smith
Course Superintendent.
